location: home / places of interest / pilikuttuwa temple

King Devanampiyatissa is said to be the 1st King to have visited/ constructed Pilikuttuwa, some 2300 ago. King Valagamba during his period of reign renovated and maintained this temple 1100 odd years ago.

Images of Lord Buddha, with an excellent reclining image and paintings that date back to 1600 years can be found here, in a relatively calm and serene setting.

Today the venerable Kinigama Ananda Himi, is the custodian of Pilikuttuwa, and has done so for 38 years. In an area of around 200 acres, which consists of 1 of the 2% natural forest reserve found in the Gampaha district, together with 99 caves comprises this ancient temple. A dolawa or palanquin belonging to the Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala, used in 1890 is also found here as is a picturesque dagoba situated within a cave.

However the most treasured inscription lies almost at the top of this mountain, where on the outside of the Manorame cave lays the carving in Asoka Aksara “ The gift of Aggibhuti, brother of cavalry officer, to the sangha of the four directions, present and absent.”
